☆definition: creative writing☆

Updated: May 22, 2021

According to Google Dictionary, ‘creative writing’ can be defined as “writing, typically fiction or poetry, which displays imagination or invention”.

When learning about creative writing it is important that you must understand how to properly start! Luckily, there’s only one true step to being a great creative writer, that is: as long as your writing has a beginning, middle and end be free to write without rules! You dear readers must be thinking ‘what?’ or ‘really?’ because I’m sure a lot of you are looking for just that – rules on how to write. Well, listen up! Having no rules when writing is simply the best because it allows your imagination to fly which creates the most engaging and exciting pieces of writing!

So before we start writing without rules we must think about what to write about. Create a general idea to get you going! This can be any idea about any object, person or thing! For example, my idea is a tub.

Just make sure your idea is interesting to you. It’s not whether your brother or your best friend finds it interesting, it’s whether YOU find it interesting. This is important because if you don’t find your idea interesting then your not going to be fully committed to your creative writing - which is a big ‘oh no!’ incident. And besides, once your writings completed, those who didn’t find it interesting in the first place might be captivated by it.

So now you know this, let’s go back to finding ideas on what to write about. My idea was about a tub.

Once you have your idea, ask questions - but questions with no rules (meaning there are no limited answers to your questions). For example:

  1. What’s in that tub?

  2. What’s interesting about it?

  3. Why is the interesting thing happening?

  4. Who’s holding it or eating from it?

So - as you can see, from one idea and questions, we can build and create new ideas which gradually contributes to your creative writing! For example, from the example questions above, my built idea is that an alien character is holding an unlimited tub of ice cream that never melts because the tub possesses magical powers!

Keep in mind to start to write once you have your first idea because once you start writing more ideas will come to you and, eventually, you’ll complete your piece creative writing! So now I might go back to writing about my tub of ice cream that never melts. Why are you still here? Go on! Why don’t you start your creative writing NOW!?
