coming of age films

Updated: Sep 14, 2020

We all do it; growing up. Everyone experiences life differently, going through highs and lows that influences us in our own respective ways. High school is a transformative stage of our life, creating memories and experiences that may stay with us forever and although everyone has their own story, we’re drawn to the youth-centred movies we see on the screen. The best coming of age movies are ones that capture a specific generation or culture in a way that mixes nostalgia and the often unwelcome reminder of adulthood.

As we all experience this essential stage of your life, here are some coming-of-age movies that deal with these themes of youth and growing up.

1. The Edge of Seventeen

A coming-of-age mixed with comedy and drama, The Edge of Seventeen illuminates the awkwardness of growing up. With strained relationships and a broken family, The Edge of Seventeen unveils the feeling of loneliness and how friendship can affect us significantly in this growing age.

Rating: 8.5/10

2. Boyhood

Throughout this movie, we literally see the main character grow up due to this film being shot over a course of 12 years. We watch a boy named Mason as he grows up through life dealing with a broken home and the difficulties we discover through our everyday lives. It makes us ask ourselves deep questions about what makes us “normal.”

Although this is about a boy’s life, we can still relate to the challenges and themes Mason faces, allowing an emotional connection between us and the main character.

Rating: 7/10

3. Perks of being a Wallflower

One of my all-time favourite movies, Perks of being a Wallflower is a fantastic coming-of-age movie adapted from a novel that deals with themes of relationships and the dark sides of mental illness. Taking place in a high-school, we journey through the lives of three protagonists as we watch their individual struggles and how they deal with these difficulties in their own way.

Set with a beautiful soundtrack and amazing visuals, we create strong connections with these characters as they overcome the high and lows of teen life while also highlighting the importance of friendship and self-discovery.

Rating: 10/10

4. Spider-man: Into the spiderverse

Not to be dramatic but this is the best spider-man film to exist, from the beautiful animation to the characters, it’s easily my favourite film of all time. Into the spiderverse follows a boy named Miles Morales as he deals with a new environment and new spider powers, facing the difficulties of being away from his family and foreign responsibilities. Having a range of characters, with deep personalities and backstories, this film will have you laughing your head off to sobbing uncontrollably the next. Truly a masterpiece.

Rating: 10000000000000/10

5. Kiki’s delivery service

Another animated film! Kiki’s delivery service feels like a gentle breeze on a cool day, it’s extremely relaxing to watch and feel. This film is just about a young witch trying her best to find her way in the world. Kiki’s Delivery Service doesn’t rush the coming-of-age aspect, highlighting its themes of self-reliance, responsibility and patience, constantly reminding us that there’s a long way to go before we mature. This is a heart-warming parable for young girls finding their way in the world.
