genres of netflix

when it comes to Netflix, I watch a lot of it… like more than the average person should… I’m pretty much up for watching anything and can watch every genre that Netflix has to offer. So here are my top recommendations for tv shows from many different genres available on Netflix!

ANIMATION

avatar: the last airbender

description: Katara and Sokka must safeguard Aang on his journey to master all four elements and save the world from the Fire Nation

thoughts on it: This show was such a nostalgic trip back to my childhood. It pulls you in straight away full of action and an interesting plotline. This show is such an easy binge with 3 long seasons full of such a unique set of characters to keep you hooked. There are a few filler episodes between the big plot but personally I think that puts the show over the top :)

rating: 10/10

COMEDY

derry girls

description: Following Erin and her friends as they grow up in 1990s Northern Ireland and attempt to navigate the highs and lows of being teenagers

thoughts on it: Derry girls is such an iconic show that makes me laugh till my stomach hurts every single episode. It taught me more about Ireland’s history, with witty characters, a unique setting, and a touch of dark humour. Unfortunately, it’s one of those shows that you can binge quickly due to the short amount of episodes :( but it truly deserves more attention!!

rating: 9/10

COMING OF AGE

atypical

description: This heartfelt comedy follows Sam, a teenager on the autism spectrum, who has decided he is ready for romance

thoughts on it: This show has taught me so much about the spectrum which I had little-to-no knowledge about before watching atypical. It’s such a heartwarming show that makes me wanna wrap myself in a blanket and drink hot chocolate. The characters feel so real that you become part of the family through their journey of change.

rating: 10/10

CRIME

brooklyn nine nine

description: Ray Holt, an eccentric commanding officer, and his diverse and quirky team of odd detectives solve crimes in Brooklyn, New York City

thoughts on it: This show is so addicting from the beginning to end. It’s a lighthearted show that I watch again and again. Whilst having the funniest cold opens ever and hilarious one-liners, it also touches upon many social issues present in the police force. The emotional growth of the character’s relationships and views is what makes this show so special.

rating: 100/10

HISTORICAL DRAMA

anne with an e

description: a coming-of-age story about a young orphan who is seeking love, acceptance and her place in the world

thoughts on it: Anne with an E is such a cute show! It can be a bit slow and it may be a bit difficult to get into the Old English but once you ease into it, Anne with an E becomes a great show to watch. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing but it’s such an interesting concept full of feminism, self-love and acceptance :)

rating: 9/10

MUSICAL-COMEDY

glee

description: An optimistic high-school teacher tries to transform the school's glee club and inspires a group of ragtag performers to make it to the biggest competition of them all

thoughts on it: Glee will forever remain an icon that shaped me into the person I am today. It is absolutely ridiculous and hilarious with all the amazing bangers from the ‘10s. The talented cast playing such hilarious characters (especially Sue Sylvester) is what puts this show in my top recommendation for musical comedy.

rating: 9/10

SITCOM

one day at a time

description: This time around, the series follows the life of Penelope, a newly single Army veteran, and her Cuban-American family, as they navigate the ups and downs of life

thoughts on it: One day at a time is a contemporary take on what life looks like in both good and bad times. It’s a heartfelt show that makes me laugh plus being so easy to binge-watch all day. Whilst voicing many issues in our world in an amazing way it also shows how loved ones can help make everything worthwhile.

rating: 10/10

TEEN DRAMA

never have i ever

description: The complicated life of a first-generation Indian-American teenager

thoughts on it: This show is created by the queen Mindy Kaling herself. Never have I ever is such an amazing show that pushes through the stereotypical american teenage experience. It starts off very corny and feels like every other teen drama show, but once you push through the first few episodes it ends up being one of the most unique shows I have ever watched. It was an emotional 5 hours straight of laughter, gasps and tears. (i’m #teamben btw)

rating: 10/10

UTOPIAN AND DYSTOPIAN FICTION

the 100

description: A nuclear conflict has decimated civilisation. A century later, a spaceship accommodating humanity's last survivors dispatch 100 juvenile delinquents back to the Earth to determine its habitability

thoughts on it: The 100 is so addictive to watch! Each season is more action-packed and nerve-wracking than the last. The unique concepts brought to every season have been pulled off to a tea! I will leave a warning of it being intense at times, so if sci-fi and fighting is not your cup of tea then I wouldn’t recommend it for you.

rating: 9/10

I hope this has helped you with some suggestions on what you can watch next! If you would like more recommendations for different genres that I didn’t touch on please email wildflower (bcawildflower@gmail.com)

Happy bingeing!
