“Always believe that the impossible is always possible.” - Selena Quintanilla

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was an American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress and fashion designer. Known as the “Queen of Tejano music”, her contributions to the music and fashion industry made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century.

Selena was born on the 16th of April, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas, US. Selena performed across Texas in the Tejano (Texan of Hispanic descent) category which was heavily played and performed by men. However, her popularity grew after she won the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of The Year in 1987, which she won nine consecutive times. She signed with EMI Latin in 1989 and released her self-titled debut album in the same year, while her brother became her principal music producer and songwriter.

Selena was shot and killed on March 31, 1995, which was 16 days before her 24th birthday, and left her husband of three years, Chris Perez behind. If Selena was still alive today, she would only be 47 years old and I’m certain she’ll be topping all the charts. The murder was committed by her friend and former manager of her Selena Etc. boutiques. This person was Yolanda Saldivar which the police caught on the night of Selena’s murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Two weeks later George W. Bush declared that Selena’s birthday would be declared ‘Selena Day’ in Texas.

A movie titled simply, ‘Selena’ was released in 1997 starring Jennifer Lopez playing the role of Selena. There is also a Netflix series coming out on December 4 about her life, simply titled, ‘Selena: The Series’... Go check it out!

Overall, Selena is an amazing, strong, and inspirational woman who would be proud to know that she is still remembered today. I am honored to be named after her.

Selena :)
