what should I read next?

Updated: Sep 17, 2020

Hi there, Bethlehem students and staff,

I personally love reading and believe it's very important. So, to encourage more people to read, below, I will be recommending some young adult fiction books to read. A synopsis of the book as well as my opinion of the book.

Name of book: The Eye of the Minds Trilogy

Author: James Dashner

Genre: Fantasy and Science Fiction

Synopsis:

For Michael and the other gamers, the VirtNet can make your wildest fantasies become real. And the more hacking skills you have the more fun. Who wants to play by the rules anyway?

But some rules were made for a reason. One gamer has been taking people hostage inside the VirtNet, with horrific consequences. The government needs Michael to track down the rogue gamer, but the risk is enormous and the line between game and reality could be blurred forever.

Opinion: If you like technology and the idea of virtual reality I highly recommend you read this book. I personally, really liked the sci-fi part of this novel as it evolved escaping into a made-up virtual world.

Side note: The movie ‘ Ready Player One’ is loosely based on this book with similar themes so you can watch that too if you prefer movies instead of books :)

Name of book: A Thousand Pieces of You Trilogy

Author: Claudia Grey

Genre: Romance, Sci-Fi and Fantasy

Synopsis:

This trilogy centres around a girl called Marguerite Caine. The daughter of two brilliant physicists, who grew up surrounded by wild scientific theories, always encouraged to imagine the improbable or even the impossible. But when her father is murdered, Margtuites life is turned upside down. All the evidence turns towards Paul, her parents’ handsome, energetic protégé (apprentice), before the law can get to Paul, he uses Marguerite’s mother's latest invention, The Firebird -- and leaps into another dimension, will Marguerite and her friend Theo be able to get Paul back? And where did he go?

Opinion: If you like the idea of time travel, like myself then I encourage you to read this book, it's suitable for a range of ages and personally was a book I decided to pick up after not reading for a long time. So, if you too haven’t read anything in a while, why don’t you give this book a try as well. This fast paced book has a strong storyline which you can easily follow and I promise it will keep you wanting to know what happens next.

Name of the book: Red Queen series

Author: Victoria Aveyard

Genre: Fantasy

Synopsis: This is a world divided by blood - Red or Silver.

The reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to 17-year-old Mare, a Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. But Mare possesses is a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of her potential, the Silvers hide Mare in plain view, declaring her a long - lost silver princess. knowing that false move will mean her death, Mare must use her new position to bring down regime -- from the inside. Now Mare has entered a game of betrayal and lies.

This is reds against silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart…

Opinion: If you like the idea of the hunger games or even a rebellion this book is for you. The character development is very good and I believe it's a great series to start off with.
