Why Olivia Rodrigo deserves the hype.

Warning: Olivia Rodrigo’s album “Sour” discusses topics for mature audiences and includes some mature lyrics and explicit language.

I have no doubt that everyone has run into the song 'driver's license’ in the past couple of months, whether it be on the radio or social media. The new up and coming star Olivia rodrigo has captured our hearts with her debut album ‘sour’. The breakup album immediately exploded in popularity with audiences connecting to its themes of lost love and growing up. The 18 year old singer-songwriter explained “Every song is so personal and close to my heart. Getting to share them with people is the most special thing I’ve ever done in my life.” The album broke record after record, initially becoming the ‘it’ album of 2021 in mainstream media. So why does it deserve the hype?

It deserves the hype because she captures young authentic emotions, because she is young and authentic. It feels shocking that she was only born a few months before I was on February 20th 2003, (maybe if i was a child actor i would have had that success). It feels so refreshing to listen to an album that reflects the exact same emotions I can go through from someone who is my age. As Olivia Rodrigo says the album feels “intrinsically young, to sing about young emotions that are difficult to talk about or aren’t really socially acceptable especially for girls: anger, jealousy, spite, sadness”. The core idea of insecurity from a young age, comparisons to new girlfriends, boy’s impossible standards and that little envious feeling when scrolling through social media.

You have most likely heard of her most popular songs on tiktok: Driver’s License, Deja Vu, Jealousy Jealousy, and Good 4 U, but there are so many other bangers on her album! Her other songs: brutal, happier, traitor, 1 step forward 3 steps back, enough for you, favourite crime and hope ur ok; are here for you to help you through the whirlwind of teenage years.

I may not be going through the world's worst breakup right now but being on the cusp of graduation, attending university soon and the idea of moving out is scary. The thought of leaving behind my teenage years which have been the best/worst years of my life is utterly terrifying but thank god I’ve got Olivia Rodrigo who is doing the exact same thing (maybe she can write an album on it). What makes the album so special is the authenticity and personal lyrics that she shares with her audiences. I have had amazing experiences listening to it, screaming the lyrics with my friends (shoutout to ava, mariam and tara), listening to it in the dead of the night, on the car ride home. It truly is different.

So I encourage you to go listen to “Sour” right now. Go to your bed, earphones in and just feel the feels. (also i am listening to ‘traitor’ whilst writing this and in my feels!)
