Simple and easy cake decorating techniques that look amazing!
THE GRADIENT CAKE
An easy way to decorate a cake is to use variations of colour with the icing and can be simply done by creating a gradient icing effect.
To achieve this look, all you need is:
food colouring
A butter knife or straight edge spatula
Bowls
Icing (of course)
Firstly, once you have made your icing, take out ¼ of it and place it in a smaller bowl, then take another ¼ of it and place it in another bowl. Ice the cake with the white icing focusing mostly on the top of the cake and the top of the side edges.
Secondly, with your food colouring (e.g blue) put a little bit into one of the ¼ full bowls and stir to create a light blue, then do the same with the other ¼ full bowl but add a bit more food colouring than the previous one for a darker shade.
Thirdly, take the darkest shade and spread it around the base of the cake. Then add the lighter colour around the middle of the cake, between the white top and dark bottom. (as shown in the reference image)
Lastly, take out your butter knife or straight edge spatula and smooth the edges until they are blended (be careful not to scrape off too much icing). There you go a simple but effective gradient cake.
